Fat Hen

Okay, so…. The boyfriend and I pass by Fat Hen pretty regularly every now and then he mentions that it looks pretty good and I typically say it has bad reviews on urban spoon. I guess the curiosity got the better of us after a few beers at Cooter Brown’s Tavern and watching Auburn get trampled.

So we walked over to Fat Hen’s and were very excited to find out that they served breakfast all day. I know it’s a bar-b-que but I got the waffles and my date got the Gulf Coast Omelet?  The waffle wasn’t bad, but then it’s pretty hard to mess them up. The syrup that came with it, came almost boiling hot. Which, I’m not complaining about, but is merely important to what I have to say about it. The syrup was so sugary, that putting a cold fork in it, or letting it sit for a minute caused it to start to solidify like toffee.

I did not try much of the Omelet, but the grits that came with it were awful, and tasted like powdered sawmill gravy mostly. My date told me to give this place a “2 out of 10” and i am directly instructed to say that, “the food tasted like sawdust.” I admit, the food wasn’t great; however, I did get a big kick out of how much he hated the place. It was humorous.

Crescent Pie & Sausage Company

Photo Credit: Crescent Pie and Sausage Company Website and Facebook

This place was great! It’s nestled in Mid-City on Banks St. The weather has been soooo beautiful lately we opted to sit outside on the deck (So I can’t say much for the decor inside, I didn’t even peek!) I also apologize for not having any pictures of my own, I don’t think my date is as interested in me taking pictures of all the food as my friends can be. Hahaha

We started with a mixed grill, which changes depending on which sausages they are offering. The plate we got was pictured on the website (minus/plus a few things).

Our Plate came with the little smokies (top right) which were topped in a someone sweet n’ sour like sauce. It was delicious! It also came with a link of boudin, a tarragon chicken sausage link and some slices of the beer-brined and smoked pork shoulder. It came with a pile of house made pickles and two lines horseradish-mustard sauce. It was delicious and while it cost around $15 it practically filled the two of us up.

We also ordered the Mid-City Slammer Pizza which came with andouille sausage, grilled chicken, house-smoked coppa, cheddar and fresh mozzarella. The crust was my favorite part (i’m not a HUGE pizza fan), but my date loved it all!

Even though we typically opt out of dessert due to lack of room, and being completely stuffed we ordered the key lime pie (my favorite). It was SOOOO good, tart but sweet, and topped with whipped cream that had key lime rind folded in. I’d come back for this dessert.

The restaurant also had a great drink and beer menu. I had a Watermelon Fizz which was fair, but would probably chose something else next time.

Tchoupstix -Covington

I was in Covington the other day, visiting a fried and we decided to get dinner. I typically go to Twin Sushi when I’m on the northshore, but we decided to try some place new. At first, this place seemed to have a bit of potential, it was clean anyway. I don’t feel as though I can elaborate much on this place. The menu looked ‘kitchy” and the sushi was regular.

I would probably not recommend this place to anyone, or ever go here again. Especially with Twin Sushi and Kazoku on the northshore.

Taqueria Corona on Magazine

I have found that the selection of Mexican food in New Orleans is in short supply, but this place is great. Taqueria Corona is a dive, and looks to be family run. As described on the website, it’s the Mexican version of the typical New Orleans neighborhood po-boy shop. We got there around 7 on a friday night and though there seemed to be a bit of a wait, we were able to sit immediately.

You can sit at the bar, which overlooks all the cooks and waiters while they work their magic in the kitchen or at the small cafe style tables. You even get to watch as they grill and chop all the meat. We sat at the bar, and started with chips and guacamole. The guacamole wasn’t fabulous, but the margaritas were.

The tacos come a la carte. Two are more than enough if you gorged yourself on chips before hand, like I tend to do. I ordered the Rib-eye Carne Asada Taco (topped with cebollita- charbroiled green onions seasoned with salt) and the Beef Tongue Taco. They gave my a side of chopped cilantro and onions which went great on both tacos. They were delicious, the rib-eye was so flavorful.

My date got the numero uno y medio which came with one burrito, one taco, and one flauta filled with your choice of meats. It came with a side of beans and rice. I’m usually not a fan of either of these sides, but the beans were fantastic. I’ll definitely be getting a side of them when I go back.

Slim Goodies

My brother came to town this weekend for the Red Dress Run and I convinced him grabbing breakfast was a good idea. We typically bring friends to Slim Goodies Diner when they come to visit us in New Orleans (or Coulis, which I love… but my brother has already been to Coulis) so my brother wanted to check it out. Slim Goodies is great if you get there during a lull (we got there around 10am and we didn’t have to wait). If you get to Slim Goodies and they are busy, get ready to wait outside, just like Camellia Grill.

Outside Slim Goodies doesn’t look like much, just another shop along Magazine St. On the inside it’s pretty ‘funky’. The wait staff are all pretty alternative and the decor matches that bohemian vibe.  The walls peppered with pictures of people who have sat in your seats before you.

I got the Heaven (which is a pecan waffle topped with strawberries and whipped cream) sans whipped cream and including a side of bacon which I smothered in cane syrup. At this point the restaurant became fairly busy and my waffle came without any syrup. The staff was pretty prompt about filling out coffee and I was able to ask for some.

My brother got the Creole Slammer which included hash browns, two eggs (cooked your way), smothered in crawfish etouffee and a biscuit to soak it all up. He also got a side of bacon his he claimed to be some of the best bacon he ever had, as you can see he ate it all before I could take a picture. I should add, the coffee was pretty good and always tasted fresh.

I definitely recommend Slim Goodies, we typically bring friends there from out of town. It’s a nice change from Camellia grill and is super casual… which is nice after a long night of drinking. You’ll find that most of the other people there are in the same boat.

Last night I went to dinner at La Crepe Nanou. It was a last minute decision, we were actually planning to go to La Thai for dinner, but it was closed. Actually every Thai restaurant we tried to stop at uptown was closed on Mondays. I have heard good things about La Crepe Nanou and its right next to La Thai so we went there. It’s cute and quaint in a bohemian/Parisian sort of way. I imagine I would have been very happy sitting in the front room (where the bar is located) the seating seemed much more comfortable. The other two rooms were pleasant and still romantic seeming, but had metal cafe chairs that I would have expected out-of-doors.
We started with Les Moules Marinières the mussels steamed in garlic, cream and white wine. They were quite delicious. My date soaked almost all of the loaf of bread we got in the cream sauce (as you can see below).  I am; however, still a favorite to the Mussels Josephine at Bonefish grill.

(I apologize for the terrible quality. It was pretty dark in the restaurant and I was using my phone.)
I had a champagne cocktail which was quite bitter, but I enjoyed it. I had the Crêpe Provençale (without Mushrooms) it was a ratatouille filled crepe and it was… perfection. I’m typically a carnivore but I was completely satisfied with this vegetarian dish. It came with a side of potatoes and french green beans. Everything was delicious, my date was even a little jealous.
My date had the smoke salmon crepe which was filled with capers and cream cheese and topped with asparagus. We stared off saying it was okay, but finished his whole plate! I’m not very partial to salmon OR capers and I found it pleasant, rich and creamy. Unfortunately there was no room for dessert.

I went back to La Crepe Nanou for dessert with some of my girlfriends. We got Crepe Nanou, Crepe Lucie (chocolate syrup, strawberries and vanilla ice cream), and the Crepe Belle Helene (vanilla ice cream, pears, and chocolate sauce). They were all delicious, the Belle Helene had cinnamon flavored pears which added something nice.
