I went to dinner a few days ago at Five Happiness. I hadn’t blogged about it until now because I found it to be a fairly typical slightly upscale Chinese restaurant. Nothing was bad and nothing was extremely spectacular.
We got egg rolls, pot stickers, mu shu pork and chicken chow mein (prepared lo mein style). It was all, okay. The eggrolls had shrimp in them and were more Vietnamese/spring roll style than I prefer. I used to work at Trey Yuen in Mandeville for two years and the food there is spectacular. I love Chinese, and it spoiled me.
I think this place is a pretty good, slightly upscale place to get Chinese food. I do think that it’s a place which remains because people bring their families there, because their parents brought them when they were little. It beats P.f. Chang’s based solely on the fact that Five Happiness is not a chain.
If you’re looking for Chinese and are not in the mood for dining-in, I suggest Hot Wok on veterans. They make a pretty good wonton soup and chicken mai fun. Don’t let its strip mall, order by picture vibe deter you, I recommend it!
In either case, we got a good laugh over my fortune cookie!
